Built-In Data Caching

One Failed LED. The Show Goes On.

Pixel data travels from one LED to the next along a bar. ProfiLED caches that data inside the bar, so a single failed chip does not take every pixel after it down with it.

The Problem

How a pixel chain normally fails

In an ordinary addressable strip every LED passes the data on to the next one. That design is what makes a long run possible from a single output, but it also means the chain is only as reliable as its weakest chip.

When one chip stops passing data, everything downstream of it goes dark or starts showing the wrong colours. On a ten meter run that can be several hundred pixels lost to a single fault.

  • Data is handed from each LED to the next
  • A failed chip normally kills everything after it
  • The longer the run, the more a single fault costs

The Fix

What caching changes during a show

ProfiLED bars cache the pixel data rather than relying on every chip to relay it perfectly. A single faulty LED becomes one dark pixel instead of a dead section, and the rest of the bar keeps running.

For a rental or touring rig this is the difference between a bar that can finish the night and one that has to be swapped between sets. The rest of that thinking is on the ProfiLED page under Built for Rental and Touring.

  • A failed chip costs one pixel, not the rest of the run
  • No mid-show swap for a single dead LED
  • Sealed IP68 body, see Waterproof IP68 Build

FAQ

Built-In Data Caching questions

Built-in data caching keeps the rest of the bar running. The fault shows as a single dark pixel rather than a dead section. Full answer in What Happens When an LED Pixel Fails?

The caching protects the run inside a bar. A bar that has lost power or lost its connector still interrupts the chain, so check the M12 connections first.

It is sensible for touring work, but caching means a single failed LED does not force a swap mid-show.
